This is a scarce pre-regulation British Sea Service cutlass, used by the Royal Navy before the Board of Ordnance introduced the 1st official standard pattern in 1804. This style of cutlass was adopted in the first half of the 18th century and was used by the Royal Navy prior to the introduction of the 1804 regulations. The cutlass features a typical figure-of-8 double-disc iron guard and standard single-edge blade; these 18th-century examples also usually feature a simple cylindrical grip made of wrapped iron. Cutlasses were stored onboard British warships and issued to ratings for use with landing parties and onboard during ship-to-ship boarding actions. Generally in good overall condition, with some surface rust and even had some of the black japanned finish to the hilt. The sword was used extensively during the American Revolutionary War.
