A superb and historically significant grouping of three beautifully preserved Foreign Service helmets, two in classic white and one in khaki, all attributed to Major M. Lauterman, VI D.C.R.C. Hussars (6th Duke of Connaught's Royal Canadian Hussars), a medical officer attached to the 4th Mounted Brigade, 4th Divisional Area during the Great War.

These helmets were originally acquired from the renowned cavalry collection sold by Bonhams, London, in July 2010 (Lot 181). Though unphotographed in the sale catalogue, a detailed description in the original listing confirmed their grouping, along with a now-lost Hussar busby tin bearing Lauterman’s name—definitively linking all three pieces to him.

Helmet 1 – Boer War Foreign Service Helmet
A striking all-white example with its original white pagri, gilt spike and spike base, and classic Hussar pattern chin chain. The white cloth covering shows slight foxing from age and storage. Interior remains exceptional, with full leather and red silk lining, showing only light wear. Retains its Hobson & Sons, London gold-blocked label and green cloth inner crown lining with no moth damage.

Helmet 2 – White Parade Wolseley Pattern
A parade-quality Wolseley pattern helmet in full white with six-panel canvas construction and original white pagri. Features a gilt spike and base, and home service pattern chin chain. The interior is pristine, with light tan leather and red silk lining intact. No visible maker’s mark but clearly produced to a high standard.

Helmet 3 – Khaki Wolseley Pattern Helmet (Canadian)
Khaki six-panel Wolseley helmet with matching khaki pagri incorporating red and blue regimental colours. Retains its original brown leather chinstrap, with a Montréal maker's stamp on the strap and gold-blocked label to the sweatband. Faint remains of a name in the sweatband—possibly French Canadian—alongside what appear to be museum accession numbers. The uniform size and quality across all three helmets further supports the single-owner provenance.

This trio presents a rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding, regimentally attributed group of early colonial service headgear, representing both British and Canadian mounted service history.
