A magnificent display piece originally belonging to James C. Lister Gay of the 15th Hussars, who joined the regiment in 1868, was promoted to Lieutenant in 1870, and sadly died on service at Meerut, India, on 10th September 1875.

The 77 cm surface features a clip-back point and is deeply etched with scrolling foliage and regimental honours from Emsdorf to Waterloo. The etching also includes the Royal Crest within the Garter and motto, the regimental title King’s XV Hussars, the crown and VR cipher, together with the owner’s family crest, motto, and initials. Maker-marked Andrews, No. 9 Pall Mall, London.

The gilt-mounted hilt has a cross guard cast with foliage and retains its two-piece ivory grips. Housed in its wood scabbard, which is sheathed in gilt metal with finely engraved panels of stylised leaves and five fish-skin openwork sections. The suspension mounts are embossed with foliage and it retains its original crimson-and-gold cord knot with acorn.

The 15th Hussars were first raised in 1759 and served for over two centuries before amalgamating with the 19th Royal Hussars in 1922 to form the 15th/19th King’s Royal Hussars — one of Britain’s most famous cavalry regiments, with distinguished service at Waterloo among many other campaigns.
