A magnificent sword for an officer of the 15th Hussars, James C. Lister Gay, who joined the regiment in 1868, was promoted to Lieutenant in 1870, died on service in Meerut, India, on the 10th September 1875. 77cm blade with clip back point, deeply etched with foliage and scrolls containing Battle Honours from Emsdorf to Waterloo. Royal Crest within Garter and motto, regimental titled ‘King’s XV Hussars’, crown VR cypher and owner's family crest, motto and initials. Maker marked ‘Andrews No.9 Pall Mall, London’. Gilt-mounted hilt with a cross guard cast with foliage. Two-piece ivory grips. Fitted into its wood scabbard, which is sheathed in gilt metal engraved panels with stylised leaves having five fish skin open work panels. The suspension mounts embossed with foliage, complete with an original knot in crimson and gold cord and an acorn. The 15th Hussars were first raised in 1759, seeing service in over two centuries before being amalgamated with the 19th Royal Hussars into the 15th King’s Royal Hussars in 1922, one of the famous British Hussar Regiments of the past 300 years, which fought at Waterloo.
