Austro-Hungarian WWI M18 Helmet

A rare and distinctive variation of the M-16 helmet featuring the unique "Hungarian" liner system. This simplified liner design uses a single rear hole and two small side rivets to secure the chinstrap and liner band. The helmet’s exterior retains most of its original Austrian brown paint, with minor losses visible in detailed web images.

The steel liner band still holds three leather pads, though the interior cushions are missing. Interestingly, each leather pad bears a clear ink stamp of the Berndorfer Bear marking on one tongue—a rare and unusual detail not often seen. The front liner pad is only lightly attached to the liner band.

The original chinstrap is complete, though rust has caused the buckle to detach from the strap; the buckle remains with the helmet, tied by string. Also included is a well-preserved, fully descriptive typed label created by the helmet’s previous owner, adding valuable provenance.
