This is an extremely fine example of the 1905 pattern Dragoon officer’s helmet, produced specifically for field service. While the standard 1905 pattern was originally an elaborate and highly polished piece of headgear, the onset of the Great War necessitated a more practical, subdued version for active service to avoid easy identification by the enemy.

While some officers chose to over-paint their existing bright helmets, this particular example was specifically manufactured without the usual ornate embellishments. It features a lightweight construction with a plain skull and comb, all finished in the correct pike grey colour. The officer-grade chin scales have been intentionally dulled to meet field service requirements.

The interior remains complete with its original officer’s leather and silk liner. There is some minor distortion noted to the white metal trim on the rear lobster tail and on the front left-hand side of the peak, but otherwise, the helmet remains in good overall condition. This represents a rare and historically significant variation within the series of Austrian Dragoon headgear.
