Heinz Krey was born in Wiesbaden in December 1921 and was killed on the 23rd May 1943 in the middle of the North Atlantic. He was posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross on the 4th September 1943. This beautiful painting, completed in oil on board, shows Krey three-quarter length wearing his Kriegsmarine officer's uniform. It has recently appeared on the collectors market from the Wiesbaden area and was in the possession of his family from WWII until today. The painting, which we image was executed as a memorial to him on the instruction of his family was painted after his death, it is signed and dated ‘Griessler 1943’, it shows Heinz Krey standing with a plain background wearing his naval junior officers visor cap, Knights Cross at neck, awards worn include the Iron Cross 1st class, the Kriegsmarine Minesweeper Badge and the Kriegsmarine Submarine Badge with the ribbon of the Iron Cross 2nd class to the upper buttonhole of his tunic. He is holding a pair of gloves in his right hand and has his left hand on his Kriegsmarine officer's dagger. The painting is in a plain battleship grey wood frame, which is extremely typical of the period. In over 35 years of handling military artefacts, which involve many items of the Third Reich, we have never been able to obtain or even seen a submariners Knights Cross officers painting as good as this, it is quite an interesting fact that with the huge amount of artists available in Germany and with it being well within the culture how very few good paintings are seen of WWII famous personalities. This painting would be an excellent backdrop to any collection of either the Kriegsmarine or the submarine base. Krey entered the Kriegsmarine in December 1939 as an engineer officer cadet. He went through various training units and in May 1940, was an officer cadet. Krey’s U-Boat career was with two boats, U-703, in which he did two patrols totalling 45 days and U-752 again two patrols with a total of 68 days. He was an engineer officer on U-703 and was Chief Engineer on U-752. In May 1943 a British Fairy Swordfish aircraft attacked the U-Boat, killed the Commander and some of the men on the conning tower, Leutnant Krey took over the command and ordered all men to abandon the U-Boat because two British destroyers arrived quickly and tried to capture the boat, Heinz Krey set the explosive charges and blew up the boat, he went down with the submarine losing his life, for that outstanding and unselfish fete he was posthumously awarded the Knights Cross, he was 21 years and 6 months old.

Ref; 83470

The rare model of the HJ/DJ banner top stop is clearly shown on page 250 of the HJ volume 2 by John R Angolia. Our example is numbered ‘207161’, the number sequences are shown in the excellent work Military Watches & Clocks by Konrad Knirin, published in 1998, all written in German, page 214. The face has all the numbers clear but toned, the name ‘Glashutte’ with the logo ‘T’ above is still clear; these normally fade away. The watch is missing its second hand but keeping excellent time. All of the functions are working correctly includ, including the small second hand and the fly back. The adjustable ring is jammed. The watch is fitted with a military coloured strap in an early form of plastic; the watches originally were all issued with brown leather straps. Standard linen exterior belonging to Trommler (Drummer Bayen) Jhno Joost Constant Bayen, a drummer in the Sudost Karten Hitler Youth. The photographs of HJ groups marching bands in various Austrian towns, Klagenfurt and Villach, with teachers, HJ leaders, a Gauleiter, Wehrmacht officers in uniforms, a remembrance ceremony, meeting Italian youth leaders at the Oberkrain Railway Station, and Reich Minister Funk. Interestingly, Bayen wears a DJ buckle, not the HJ buckle that his comrades wear. Included are four prisoner of war cards to home from Camp No. 142 in Thol Par Pont-D’Ain in France. The noted Hitler Youth author, unfortunately now deceased, Philip Baker, who wrote many good works on the Hitler Youth,th writes to the previous owner of this album in January 1999, thanking him for the loan of the album. He then goes on in his letters to identify each page and what each page contains. Images number 56, 58 and 80 definitely identify him wearing the RFS shoulder boards. The following prisoner of war cards are four cards which he writes to his parents in late 44 and early 45 sending them messages that he is OK and looks forward to seeing them sometime in the future. The binding is unusual for a book of such quality; the 13 beautifully illustrated colour plates, accompanied by pages of text, are placed within the cover, punch-holed, then held together with cord, 13 prints show every different aspect of uniforms within the German Ordnungs Polizei, beginning with the carrying of the police standard and ending with the police officers standing together. The quality of the artistry and depth of colour is magnificent. All of the hand-drawn images were produced by Herbert Knotel, and he has signed all of his work ‘Knotel’. He was a well-known military artist from 1893 to 1963. Between the colour plates, there are extra plates with text describing the uniforms and the department of the service they represent. To the sleeve of the SD man, the lozenge reads ‘SD’. In the top right-hand corner ‘WHW 1941’. This was the Winter Help Work campaign of the winter of 1941, when the German Armed Forces were struggling on the Eastern Front, the lettering below ‘TAG DER DEUTSCHEN POLICE’ (Day of the German Police) with a very attractive police green eagle to the lower right-hand corner. Two items of damage, one to the top left-hand corner and one to the top right-hand corner, both photographed on this website. This album, standard, purchased fabric covered album containing 256 of the most magnificent images. The opening page is beautifully annotated and line-drawn with the description of the soldiers' march into Poland in September 1939. Photographs of the advance into Poland, the destruction of Polish towns and military installations. Polish prisoners, dead animals, and a picture of Polish Jewish people. Virtually every image in the whole album is annotated below in white pencil extremely neatly. German vehicles on makeshift bridges crossing rivers. Shot down a Polish aircraft. Pictures within the City of Lodz. German soldiers at rest on the march. Destruction of a Polish armoured train. Many good images of vehicles. German soldiers burying their dead. Images internally in Warsaw, destroyed buildings, and aircraft. The quality of the images themselves is tremendous. A German victory parade in front of Adolf Hitler in Warsaw. A further hand-drawn map of the next campaign the soldier was involved in was the invasion of France. Pictures of Bastogne, Louvain and Namur with destroyed buildings. Brussels images. Again, every image is annotated. A close-up of German vehicles with officers and men. At this point, we come across 18 images of the destruction on the beaches of Dunkirk. We have seen images before of Dunkirk, but they all seem to be taken by propaganda photographers and sold in the canteens. These are all individual shots taken by this individual soldier; he must have been one of the very first troops into Dunkirk after the evacuation. Wrecked ships on the seashore, damaged British and French vehicles and tanks, and sunken ships. Images then of Antwerp, then onto Calais, shot down British aircraft, a French graveyard. Then onto Boulogne, again excellent images, close-ups of men and officers. The beach of Boulogne. Images of French Colonial troops being taken away to prisoner of war camps. German First World War memorials. Amazing shots of destroyed German Maginot Line installations. The interior of the City of Lille. Then onto Paris, standard tourist shots, Palais of Versailles. Another huge Maginot Line complex, with photographs taken both outside of the damage and inside. The album then goes into activities during the occupation, post-French capitulation. Vehicles are being moved on trains. Images of Rouen. By 1942, he must have been sent back to France; the next set of images, 12 in total, are the most amazing pictures of the Canadian failed invasion of Dieppe. Again, as before with Dunkirk, we have seen standard canteen shots, but these are personal photographs taken by this soldier. A destroyed British tank on the promenade and two horrific photographs of Canadian bodies lying together by the roadside. Images of debris and wrecked vehicles on the beach itself. The album comes to an end with mainly tourist shots of attractive French towns, including of course, Paris. German soldiers outside the opera in Paris, and a wonderful shot from the top of the Eiffel Tower down along the Champs-Élysées. We have never had a Polish and French campaign album before of such an incredible magnitude.

Ref; 96047

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0859/4420/5648/files/DSC_6185_6c275de2-b4d3-418b-ab1c-ea77f111d1d7.jpg?v=1772802111
german-wwii-military-volkswagen-beetle
GERMAN WWII MILITARY VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE

As is well known, the VW Beetle was designed in 1937 by Erwin Komenda under Professor Ferdinand Porsche on the instructions of Adolf Hitler to produce a ‘peoples’ car’. Komenda’s aerodynamic styling included the split rear windows because curved glass was inordinately expensive. Stuttgart-based coachbuilder Reutter created the buck for the classic Beetle shape that would remain virtually unchanged until 1967. On the May 26, 1938, Hitler laid the cornerstone of the brand new factory near Fallersleben, Lower Saxony, that would produce the 'KdF-Wagen' or 'Strength through Joy' car, and the adjoining new town would be known as 'KdF-Stadt' – renamed Wolfsburg post-war. Hitler also introduced a savings scheme where aspiring owners could collect stamps that would eventually pay for their car. Production was to start in September 1939 coinciding with the outbreak of WW2. World War Two was declared. Though a trickle of Types 60 and 4WD 82e KdF-Wagens were built between 1939 and 1944, production inevitably focused on military vehicles such as the Kubelwagen and Schwimmwagen. For most of the war, the KdF plant escaped heavy bombing because the new town was not on many allied maps. From 1944 the factory manufactured the V1 flying bomb, until US bombing raids destroyed the factory. It’s possible that production of KdF Volkswagens between 1937 and 1944 totalled 840 units. The typ 92 was produced in less then 50 units , while the typ 82e in less then 400 units.

The kdf 92 and the 82e has the kdf 82 (kubelwagen) chassis, being destined to military use.The military kdf , typ 92 and 82e , has the chassis starting number with 5 (engine number too), while the civic kdf the chassis starting number was 1 , typ 82 kubelwagen was 2 and typ 166 Schwimmwagen was 7.

A nicely constructed DDAC car pennant measuring 38 x 21cm. The identification number known as the Werk number 8735 identifies the tail of an aircraft that was part of the 111 Staffel of JG 26 in North Africa. The aircraft was destroyed by ground strafing in Libya 1942, the original identification tag for this aircraft is known to be in a US collection, we obtained this piece from a collection in Australasia, its history of how it appeared in the Melbourne area in the 1950s is shrouded in theory and suggestion and fact, initially it was thought that the destroyed aircraft was brought back to Australia as part of a war bond drive and at the end of the war broken up, however the list of aircraft taken back to Australia for the War Bond drives does not include this Werk number, we can only assume that it may have been taken back to Australia by the Royal Australian Air Force for close inspection and then destroyed at the end of World War II, thankfully a person unknown managed to save this important tailpiece with its complete swastika on both sides, the item has been photographed for one book only, Luftwaffe Camouflage and Markings book series by Kenneth Merrick, the tailpiece went through the hands of three different collectors in Australia and is now on the open market again, the bullet and shrapnel holes are evident in the photographs, on one side of the tailpiece the lettering has been applied “by the sign of the clapped out Swastika” indicating to us that it was displayed at the Royal Australian Air Force Museum at Point Cook. The Werk number of this aircraft is within 60 numbers of the aircraft that the famous fighter pilot, North Africa Hans Joachim Marseille, known as the Star of Africa, died in after his engine failed.
